Pure Argan Co sources its oil directly from one of Morocco’s few Fair trade cooperatives. By only sourcing Fair trade oil, we stand committed to supporting the cooperative workers as they strive to improve their quality of life and that of their community.
With standards including protection of worker’s rights, the environment, and payment contributing toward the Fair trade minimum price and premium; Fair trade works to benefit small-scale farmers and workers, who are amongst the most marginalised groups globally. Through trade rather than aid, we help enable them to maintain their livelihood and reach their potential.
For centuries the laborious task of extracting oil from the Argan nut has been performed by the indigenous Moroccan Berber women. The extraction process is labour intensive, requiring a special technique and a lot of patience; it can take one woman up to 9 hours to produce one litre of oil. This labour, however, provides the women with an opportunity for social and economic freedom that they would not otherwise have.
For this, Pure Argan Co believes strongly in working alongside our chosen cooperative to ensure that these women are being paid fairly for their work. Having developed a fantastic relationship with our cooperative, we believe it is our social responsibility in regularly working with them in order to uncover ways we can improve the working lives of these wonderful women including educational, environmental and agricultural initiatives.
In addition to only sourcing Fair trade certified premium Argan Oil, Pure Argan Co donates a percentage of its revenue to organisations that directly benefits the women in the South of Morocco and their families. Pure Argan Co also supports a variety of UK based Charities who focus on issues affecting women.
